Frequently Asked Questions
Have other questions?
What are gaelic sports?
We play two different sports of gaelic origin - hurling (and/or kamogie - women’s hurling) and gaelic football. Both sports are 2,000+ years old and insanely fun.
We tend to describe hurling as lacrosse, field hockey, and baseball combined; and gaelic football as rugby, soccer, and volleyball combined.
do I have to have prior experience and/or any talent as an athlete?
No! Our club exists to promote Irish culture and the tradition of these ancient sports, but even more so to be a local Memphis community. While we have found that people with prior experience in some of the modern sports named above might have a reference for some of the technical skills in hurling and gaelic football, it’s not necessary.
We welcome any and all who are interested in learning something new, activity, competition, and community.
how does one join?
Our membership process is meant to be accessible and straightforward. Email us at memphisgaa@gmail.com, shoot us a message on one of our social platforms, and/or text or call any of our board or current members. Any of the above will get you to the right spot to join.
do these sports have different seasons?
Memphis GAA has adopted a fall and spring season calendar, during which we play both sports.
Our spring season tends to run March - June, and our fall season runs September - early December. In the off seasons, our group tends to find ways to spend time with one another outside of the sports, such as meeting up at festivals or kayaking the Wolf River.
what’s the pub league?
The pub league is our local (Memphis GAA) intra-club play. This league is sponsored by four generous, local establishments - Memphis Made, Celtic Crossing, High Cotton, and Majestic Grille. Each weekend during the seasons, we sport their jerseys and hit the pitch! Games are usually followed by “afters” - drinks and/or snacks at one of the sponsors’ locations.
what’s the travel league?
Memphis GAA belongs to the USGAA Southeast division, under the umbrella of the USGAA (US Gaelic Athletic Association). This regional league is the one in which we’ll travel to compete as a collective Team Memphis with other likeminded teams in cities from Little Rock to Tampa.
