Frequently Asked Questions

  • We play two different sports of Gaelic origin - hurling (and/or camogie - women’s hurling) and Gaelic football. Both sports are 2,000+ years old and insanely fun.

We tend to describe hurling as lacrosse, field hockey, and baseball combined; and Gaelic football as rugby, soccer, and volleyball combined.

  • In Gaelic football, players advance a heavy spherical ball, up the field with a combination of carrying, bouncing, kicking, hand-passing, and soloing (dropping the ball and then toe-kicking the ball upward into the hands). This uses a combination of skills similar to soccer, rugby, and basketball to score between the opponent’s goalposts either over the crossbar (1 point), or under the crossbar into a net guarded by a goalkeeper for one goal (3 points).

  • Hurling is a fast-paced field game that incorporates the skills of lacrosse, hockey, and baseball. Hurling uses a stick (called a hurley) to hit a small ball (called a sliotar) between the opponent’s goalposts either over the crossbar (1 point), or under the crossbar into a net guarded by a goalkeeper for one goal (3 points).

  • Memphis GAA belongs to the USGAA Southeast division, under the umbrella of the USGAA (US Gaelic Athletic Association). This regional league is the one in which we’ll travel to compete as a collective Team Memphis with other likeminded teams in cities from Little Rock to Tampa.
